“There is no shortage of food,” said Regina Anderson, Executive Director of the Food Recovery Network. We don’t have that in America – we have too much food. We can throw most of it away—almost all of it—and still have food to feed everyone. It’s just a distribution problem.”

1 in 5 Hawaiians rely on food banks for help—yet 237,000 tons of good food is wasted every year. Aloha Harvest—the state’s food waste nonprofit—aims to close that gap by taking bulk food from donors and sending it to food aid organizations on Oahu. Since 1999, the organization has rescued and distributed nearly 11 million kilograms (24 million pounds) of food.

Each day, City Harvest deploys 26 refrigerated trucks to pick up food from nearly 2,500 farms, restaurants, retailers and manufacturers, then deliver the food. to hundreds of soup kitchens, food and community food programs.
