GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day to encourage people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity.

If you’d like to help expand the gap year option to as many people as possible, make a donation to GYA, the not-for-profit governing body for the gap year industry. GYA uses grants to fund research, provide high-quality professional development, and ensure that programs in the gap year space offer high-quality, risk-assessed programs that are accessible to students worldwide.

California State Parks Foundation

Carpe Mundi is a non-profit organization that offers low-income, first-generation Portland college students a one-year mentoring and scholarship program that includes a study abroad experience program.

Carpe Mundi staff provide students with a comprehensive support network before and after the trip: navigating study and travel logistics, applying for scholarships, learning academic success tactics, and feeling emotionally supported. Plus, it helps the Park Service continue important work like protecting the oceans and eradicating invasive plant species to help save bees. Permits can be purchased in person at any park foundation or on the USGS website.

Is it your life’s mission to help save polar bears, but don’t know where to start? Start a fundraiser and ask your friends and family to donate. Then, you can drive right into Bringland Bridge National Conservation Area or Cape Crossenstern National Monument, where polar bears live naturally in the national park system. Volunteering in the parks is one of the many ways you can make sure you’re doing your part to support the national parks. When 26-year-old Atticus died after a battle with brain cancer, his family wanted to raise money for a cause he cared deeply about to honor his legacy. Because Atticus loved spending time traveling to national parks in his van, his family started a fundraiser to help the National Park Foundation, eventually raising more than $17,000.

Abby is an illustrator, designer and hand typographer who created maps of national parks as her senior thesis project at the Pratt Institute. Donations to his fundraiser will support the production of a coffee table book that collects all the maps he has created in one place. To support the parks, 10 percent of the profits from Abbey’s fundraising goes to the National Park Conservancy.
