Irc Donations – The International Rescue Committee (IRC) provides emergency and long-term assistance to vulnerable refugees – including at-risk groups such as women and children – to help them cope with and recover from the crisis. All donations go directly to IRC for immediate use with their local partners in Tigray, Ethiopia. The needs are pressing and we can do something! The Tigray region of Ethiopia is suffering from several humanitarian crises. The United Nations appealed for immediate life-saving action and assistance. Having lived and worked in Ethiopia, the country holds a special place in my heart. The current conflict and instability in Tigray is absolutely tragic, with more than 70,000 refugees fleeing the ongoing violence in the region and more than 1.7 million displaced.

With a strong desire to help, I am raising money and awareness through my participation in the Marathon des Sables in October 2021. While these funds may not bridge political divides, they can provide urgent aid to those who need it most—vulnerable women and children facing abuse and exploitation. I can’t stand the growing humanitarian crisis anymore, and so, I’m running… running for Tigre.

Community Responds To Show Support For Afghan Refugees

All donations are directed to the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to deploy aid and supplies in Tigray. The IRC is on the ground to provide critical medical care, clean water and other assistance in Ethiopia and other crisis areas. Your donation can help them reach families struggling to survive.

Emily Martin, IRC Associate Director, shares the organization’s strategy for increasing donations by creating a cross-channel, full-funnel approach to digital marketing.

As a digital fundraiser for the International Rescue Committee, an organization that has addressed the plight of refugees for nearly 90 years, we have built a proven track record of effectively connecting donor support with families affected by the world’s worst humanitarian crises. With funds raised from a pool of global donors, the IRC strives to provide health care, help children learn, empower individuals and communities to become self-reliant, and address the inequalities faced by women and girls.

These efforts can only come to life through a steady increase in donations, even though the number of families in need increases every year. In fact, in 2021, IRC and our partners reached more than 31.5 million people in crisis-affected countries. Although the challenge is great, we remain optimistic and steadfast in our mission.

Our First Donation To The Irc

We saw a new opportunity in 2022 to rethink our digital marketing approach and increase donations. We redesigned our strategy in three key ways, resulting in over 42% increase in new donors compared to our control groups. Here’s how we did it.

Our fundraising efforts have historically focused on lower funnel targets. To create awareness, attention and conversion throughout the donor journey, we needed to create a full funnel strategy.

At first, our team was hesitant to expand our strategy. For years, direct response research campaigns successfully supported our goal of finding donors who were willing to contribute. However, we knew that increasing awareness in digital channels would be critical to building the next generation of donors. We wanted to share deep, heartfelt stories about how a global force of donors can impact families in need in real ways. Our team learned that brands running direct response and branded video ad campaigns saw their brand campaigns increase conversions by 28%.

So we turned to YouTube to unlock rich, new forms of storytelling and connect with sponsors in ways that complement our research campaigns.

We used video display campaigns to spread the emergency messages, resulting in over 7 million views, 57 million impressions and a 90% relative increase in brand search. Our YouTube outreach helped build awareness and drive new potential sponsors to open their wallets.

The fresh, full-funnel approach above helped us see how multiple campaigns can combine to create more than the sum of its parts. To further measure performance, we then had to think about being more present to “ready to donate” consumers where they are across all channels. Cost and competition were high in lower-funnel search campaigns, and we struggled to find additional conversions with an effective ROI. To unlock more affordable conversions, we wanted to explore how we could extend our display campaigns beyond search, looking at cross-channel opportunities to sustainably increase donations.

After enhancing the top of the funnel with video outreach campaigns, we added video action and performance maximization campaigns to enrich the middle of the funnel down. Instead of single search campaigns, we have successfully scaled performance campaigns to other channels. With Performance Max in particular, we were able to leverage the full range of Google advertising channels — YouTube, Display, Search, Search and Gmail — from one campaign.

This strategy led to immediate response and donations across more consumer touch points. Here’s a snapshot of how we combined digital advertising campaigns to bring a cross-channel strategy to life.

As we tested these new campaign strategies, it became important to understand the impact of our investments. This prompted us to take a closer look at our measurement practices to ensure we were accurately assessing the impact of our marketing on our fundraising goals.

Thanks to advances in data-driven attribution and machine learning-based conversion modeling, our team was able to automatically unlock a complete picture of our donor journeys. By choosing a data-driven attribution model, we were able to accurately credit the campaigns, keywords, and ads that had the biggest impact on our conversions. This helped us see interactions between our campaigns and invest more in valuable ad interactions that led to increased donations.

These strategies combine our digital strategy to help generate demand and increase conversions across different channels — all while improving our measurement base — so we can fully assess the impact of our marketing. Our mission is to make our programs a model for global humanitarian response. Our integrated, full-funnel approach to Google Ads has enabled us to leverage donations and make this mission a reality.

Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, IRC NorCal supporters continued the tradition of welcoming the holidays this year, raising nearly $15,000. Items for 60 IRC families.

International Rescue Committee — Wally Krantz’s Outside Order

In recent years, IRCs in Sacramento and Turlock have coordinated a Winter Welcome/Welcome Home donation drive to engage community generosity to help newly arriving families and IRC beneficiaries with the transition. The IRC received physical donations such as bicycles, kitchen utensils and toys (as shown below) to be inventoried and distributed to families as a ‘winter welcome’.

Due to the pandemic, IRC piloted the use of Amazon wishlists, spread across all four offices for a virtual experience. Donors could purchase items pre-selected by Amazon and then have them shipped directly to customers’ homes. IRC’s four Northern California offices – Turlock, San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento – coordinated with staff to select high-need families for assistance. In addition to nearly $15,000 in items sent to families, donors contributed nearly $5,000 in gift cards and general donations to support the needs of other families and emerging clients.

The IRC is grateful for your continued support of refugees, immigrants, and survivors of crime and human trafficking throughout Northern California.
