In the world’s most difficult places, displaced families need your help more than ever. In Yemen, at the end of 2020, under-5 malnutrition was the highest ever recorded. In Afghanistan, humanitarian needs are increasing amid chronic violence and epidemics. Register The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a non-governmental organization that provides humanitarian assistance, relief and development. Emily Martin, IRC Associate Director, shared the organization’s plan to increase donations by building a holistic, multi-channel approach to digital marketing.
New Americans Campaign
As a digital funder of the International Rescue Committee, an organization that has addressed the plight of refugees for nearly 90 years, we have built a proven track record of effectively connecting donor support to families affected by the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Through the funds we raise from a group of global donors, the IRC provides lasting impact by providing health care, helping children learn, empowering individuals and communities to become independent, and often addressing the inequalities that women and girls face each other.
These efforts can only be possible with a sustainable growth in donations, as the number of families in need grows every year. In addition, by 2021, IRC and our partners have reached more than 31.5 million people in disaster-affected countries. Although the challenge is long, we remain optimistic and steadfast in our mission.
We saw a new opportunity in 2022 to review our digital marketing approach and increase donations. We also rethought our strategy in three key ways, resulting in over 42% growth in new customers compared to our control groups. Here’s how we do it.
Our fundraising efforts have historically focused on low goals. To drive awareness, consideration and conversion throughout the donation journey, we had to build a comprehensive strategy.
Donate — Walla Walla Immigrant Rights Coalition
At first, our team was hesitant to expand our plan. For many years, direct response campaigns have successfully supported our goal of finding donors willing to contribute. But we knew that growing awareness of digital channels would be important in building the next generation of customers. We wanted to share deep and heartfelt stories of how the global power of donors can impact families in need in real ways. Our team has learned that brands running direct response and video marketing campaigns have seen brand campaigns drive 28% of conversions.
So we went to YouTube to unlock rich and innovative ways to tell stories and connect with customers in ways that fit our search campaigns.
We used video outreach campaigns to spread our urgent messages, leading to over 7 million views, 57 million impressions and a 90% increase in brand searches. Our YouTube channel has helped create awareness and purpose for new customers to open their wallets.
The new comprehensive framework approach described above helped us see how many initiatives can come together to create something greater than the sum of their parts. To increase efficiency, we then had to think about being more present so that they are “ready to serve” customers wherever they are across all channels. Costs and competition were high in our subsequent search campaigns and we were finding it difficult to identify incremental changes in effective ROI. To unlock affordable innovations, we wanted to explore how we can expand our campaigns beyond Research by looking at different opportunities to sustainably increase donations.
We Stand With Ukraine — Gino’s East
After growing the top of the funnel with video outreach campaigns, we added Video Action and Performance Max campaigns to enrich the middle and bottom of the funnel. Instead of single search campaigns, we have successfully scaled campaigns across multiple channels. With Performance Max Direct, we were able to access the full range of Google advertising channels (YouTube, Display, Search, Discovery and Gmail) from a single campaign.
This strategy extends direct response and delivers to all customer touchpoints. Here’s a snapshot of how we craft digital marketing campaigns to bring a channel strategy to life.
As we evaluate these new campaign strategies, it is imperative that we understand the impact of our investments. That led us to take a deep look at our measurement methods to ensure we were accurately measuring the impact of marketing on our customer acquisition goals.
Thanks to data-driven insights and advances in machine-driven conversion modeling, our team has been able to automatically unlock a complete picture of our customer journeys. By choosing a data-driven attribution model, we were able to precisely target the campaigns, keywords, and ads that had the biggest impact on our conversions. This helped us see the connection between our campaigns and invest more in valuable marketing communications that led to increased donations.

These strategies combine to help us integrate our digital strategy to increase demand and increase conversions across all channels, while improving our measurement base, so we can assess the full impact of our marketing.
