Diabetes Canada knows that Vancouver Islanders have some clothes in the back of their closets that don’t need to be there anymore.

The charity is inviting residents to take part in the “40 Days, 40 Facilities” challenge from March 2 to April 14. People are asked to take one piece of unwanted clothing or textiles each day for 40 days, then donate 40 items to Diabetes Canada at the end of the challenge.

Donors Choice Looking For Donations

“Donating 40 items in 40 days will give new life to your recycled items, while reducing waste and giving back to the millions of Canadians affected by diabetes,” said Sean Shannon, CEO and president of the National Diabetes Foundation in a press release.

Items can be placed in a donation box or people can schedule a free in-home pickup through http://declutter.diabetes.ca.

Proceeds from donations go to Diabetes Canada to support research and create summer camp opportunities tailored for children with type 1 diabetes.

“Thanks to generous donors and volunteers, 100 million pounds of clothing and small household items are diverted from landfills annually,” according to a press release.

With donation bins overflowing and in some cases surrounded by illegally dumped trash, Diabetes Canada has issued an open letter to community leaders and elected officials to help raise awareness of the issue.

The association, which stopped collecting donations on March 23 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, said the bin situation “represents a serious health and safety issue.”

Many Canadians have spent extra time at home cleaning in recent weeks. But with shops closed and most bins taped or full, there are few options available to donate items.

Places To Donate Clothes Before Moving

Diabetes Canada said it does not have the funding to deploy staff to clean up the more than 5,000 bins across the country.

The association said it contacted government agencies to help remove the trash, but efforts were unsuccessful.

Diabetes Canada’s donation containers are overflowing, and some are becoming dumping grounds for well-meaning citizens who want to support our work, according to the open letter.

Since Diabetes Canada began its bi-annual clothing donation drives in 2020, Canadians have donated more than 450,000 pounds of clothing and small household items that have been used to raise funds to support more than 11 million Canadians affected by diabetes.

Diabetes Canada will be in Lacombe on September 16th between 09:00 and 13:00. at No Frills at 5700 Hwy 2A with a truck ready to be filled with gently used clothing and small household donations.

Your support helps support research for people living with diabetes and gives children living with type 1 diabetes the opportunity to attend Diabetes Canada summer camps designed with their needs in mind.

Engines Humming For Homeless

For those unable to make it to the community clothing drive this Saturday, they can donate used clothing to one of the charity’s donation bins or schedule a free home collection.

Each year, Diabetes Canada funds its initiatives and research with clothing and items donated through the Declutter donation program. Any donation can be dropped off at donation bins located across Canada or scheduled for pickup.

The previous donor journey to arrange a pick-up from Declutter started with a contact form on their company page, followed by an invitation to arrange a pick-up time and location. Common pain points included high dropout rates, failed or incomplete returns, and longer administration times. More effort and fewer successful downloads meant less revenue for important diabetes research.
