Ohio Epa Scholarship – The competitive, merit-based scholarship is awarded to Ohio college students who demonstrate outstanding education and commitment to a career in environmental science or environmental engineering. Nine students have been selected to receive scholarships for 2022, which will be funded through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Education Fund.

Taylor is majoring in environmental science and minoring in Spanish and English. She is president of the biologist honor society Beta Beta Beta and the campus bird club.

The summer after her sophomore year, Taylor participated in the Muskie Fellowship program for students working on hands-on research projects with faculty.

Taylor Dr. Jim Dooley, Bill and Martha Lovejoy Professor of Biology, and Dr. Danny Ingold, Homer A. Anderson, in partnership with Distinguished Professor of Natural Sciences, have continued their tenth year of research on grassland bird populations in North America. For the past 20 years, teams of students and teachers have spent most of the summer collecting data on birds at The Wilds, the largest conservation site in North America.

“I first learned about the grassland bird project when I enrolled,” Taylor said. “My freshman year, I came to campus for a screening of Mask and met Dr. Dooley. That same year he invited me to ride on the prairie bird team at The Wilds. I spent a day with them and immediately wanted to major in environmental science and be a part of this project.

This summer, Taylor worked as a naturalist intern at Salt Fork State Park. Her future plans include graduate school and a career in conservation. Chelsea Steffes, Class of 2018, received an Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Fellowship, which recognizes students in their final year of study who have demonstrated through their work or research that they are pursuing a career in environmental science.

“These scholarships allow some very successful students to complete their degrees and join the ranks of scientists dedicated to studying and improving the environment,” said Ohio Environmental Protection Agency Director Craig W. Butler.

Steffes, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, is one of 12 environmental and engineering students awarded scholarships to Ohio colleges and universities this year through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Education Fund. Students in four-year programs will receive a $2,500 scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year.

“Engaging students in solving real-world problems in society, whether through courses, internships and targeted research, is a hallmark of our environmental science program,” said John Ritter, professor of geology. “Chelsea’s participation not only gave her the opportunity to explore different aspects of the environmental profession, but also gave her an advantage in a very competitive scholarship program. We are proud of her achievements.”

A double major in environmental science and economics, Steffes has worked on numerous environmental projects. Next semester, she plans to conduct research analyzing the impact of hurricanes and possible renovations to the new health, wellness and athletics center being built on campus.

“In [assistant professor of geology and environmental sciences Sarah] Fortner’s environmental research methods class, we did a project analyzing lead levels in the soil of a potential community garden plot for the Promise area,” said Steffes, who worked for FedEx last summer. Their environmental division is headquartered in Pittsburgh. “We found very low levels and it is now a community garden. I also helped with a project that senior Kelsey Mack worked on last fall. I helped him collect zooplankton samples from pre-trial detention centers. Our hypothesis is that high-income areas have lower zooplankton biodiversity than low-income areas because they use more pesticides and fertilizers.”

Steffes is a member of Power (Green Club), student senator, student specialist, faculty assistant, resident consultant and event organizer for the Lesotho Nutrition Initiative.

“I’m not sure what I want to do in the future,” Steffes said. “I was thinking about joining a government or non-profit organization. really helped me discover many different ways to complete my degree. I am not limited in my actions.”

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency awarded a total of $30,000 to students this year. Since the scholarship program began in 2000, $817,450 has been awarded to 46 students at 332 Ohio colleges and universities. Steffs is the fifth student to receive this award. Funding comes from civil fines collected by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency for violations of air and water pollution control laws. The scholarship program is administered by the Ohio Academy of Sciences.

Since 2006, a total of 20 science students from Australia have received this scholarship. Emily Nicholls will continue her field research this year, using a combination of field sampling and aerial photography to compare the quality of the marsh, dominated by the invasive reed canary, with a diverse native plant community. Tyler Theaker studies Sora and Virginia Rails, birds that live in wetland communities like the Black Fork Wetlands. He analyzes bird samples to determine whether the birds are absorbing toxic lead from lead accumulated from previous hunting. Haley Nininger and Jordyn Vidmar are collaborating on a project to develop a rapid, reliable, and cost-effective method for extracting organochlorine, phosphate, and pyrethroid insecticides from sediment.
