Jobs Investment Banker
Investment bankers facilitate large, complex financing transactions. These transactions may involve acquisitions, mergers or sales for customers. Another function of investment bankers is to issue securities as a means of raising capital. This requires the company to file detailed documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) required to go public.
Investment Banker Job Description
An investment banker can save a client time and money by identifying the risks associated with a particular project before the venture moves forward. In theory, an investment banker is an expert in his or her field or field, with a finger on the pulse of the current investment climate. Businesses and nonprofit organizations turn to investment bankers for advice on how best to plan their growth.
An investment banker also helps in pricing financial instruments and navigating regulatory requirements. When a company conducts an initial public offering (IPO), an investment bank buys a majority of the company’s shares either directly or as an intermediary. In this case, the investment bank on behalf of the listed company then sells the company’s shares to the public market, creating immediate liquidity.
The investment bank would profit in this scenario and usually buy its shares at a premium. In doing so, the investment bank takes on significant risk. Even though experienced analysts at an investment bank use their expertise to price the stock accurately, the investment banker loses money on the trade if they overvalue the stock.
For example, Pete’s Paints Co., a paint and hardware chain, is considering going public. Owner Pete approaches Catherine, a prominent investment banker. Pete and Catherine enter into an agreement in which Catherine (on behalf of her company) agrees to purchase 100,000 shares of Pete’s Paints for the company’s IPO at $24 per share based on the recommendations of her team of analysts. The investment bank will pay $2.4 million for 100,000 shares.

After filing the appropriate paperwork, such as an SEC Form S-1, and setting a date and time for the IPO, Catherine and her team began selling shares in the open market at $26 per share. However, due to weak demand the investment bank cannot sell more than 20% of the shares at this price and is forced to lower the price to $23 to sell the remaining holdings. This ultimately leads to the defeat of Catherine and her team.
Investment banking is popular because investment bankers are generally well paid. However, these positions require specific skills such as excellent number crunching abilities, strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work long and grueling hours.
Education requirements typically include an MBA from a top institution and possibly a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
Investment bankers must follow a code of conduct set by their firm and usually sign a non-disclosure agreement because the information they receive is sensitive. In addition, there is potential for conflict of interest if the advisory and business divisions of investment banks interact with each other.
