How To Compare Different Banks’ Job Titles
Financial Modeling Certification Need to Prepare for Wall Street? Will preparing for Wall Street help me get into investment banking?
Investment banking analysts are usually hired straight out of college for a two-year program, which sometimes extends to a third year.
For most first-year investment banking analysts, the average gross income is between $170,000 and $190,000.
The table below shows the average bonuses for 1st year, 2nd year and increasingly rare 3rd year analysts.
Project Finance Career Paths
Traditionally, investment banking analysts receive their first annual bonus within 12 months of arrival, and do not move to a calendar year bonus until they are promoted to junior officer (from “a”).
However, companies are increasingly moving to a “fluid year” model to reset IB analysts’ bonuses by the end of December of the calendar year. In this case, analysts receive a “small” check at the end of the first calendar year (typically $30,000 to $35,000 5 months after arrival), and the next bonus comes 12 months later.
As in the US, there is a standard base: in London, almost all firms now offer a base of £60,000, rising to £65,000 and £70,000 for 2nd and 3rd year analysts respectively.
After adjusting the pound to the euro in smaller European financial centers such as Switzerland, Frankfurt and Zurich, salaries are comparable to those in London.
Investment Banking Target Schools
The absolute best analysts receive 100% of base salary as bonuses (in some cases even 105% of base salary), while the poorest analysts receive 70% of base salary in most companies.
In many companies, being at the bottom of the group is a not-so-subtle indicator that you won’t be promoted in the future.
Thus, an analyst’s ranking relative to other team members—compared to their ranking relative to other teams or other firms—is the most important indicator of career prospects within that firm.
Investment banks organize their groups primarily by industry (“reach”) and compete against other firms based on how much business they do in each industry.
Investment Banking Recruitment: The Ultimate Guide
If an analyst is in an industry group that does a lot of business and generates high profits for the bank, that group’s bonus is higher than in less successful groups.
At the end of each year, the investment bank allocates a percentage of the company’s earnings to employee benefits.
Not all investment banks are the same – a select few are called affiliates, they handle multi-billion dollar businesses and exist within the giant global financial institutions (eg Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan).
Others, called high-end boutiques, cover similarly large deals but focus only on investment banking M&A advice (eg Evercore, Lazard and Guggenheim).

Finally, others target the middle market. Although they can be broken down in different ways, wages are clearly defined in most “standard” companies:
As banks find it increasingly difficult to retain private equity analysts (despite the looser vesting), analysts tend to stay on for the second year, except for the third.
Compensation consulting firm Johnson & Johnson predicts year-end bonuses will reach their highest level since the Great Recession of 2008 as the financial services industry benefits from a sharp recovery in business volume.
In 2021, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan are preparing to pay more bonuses to investors, and virtually all investment banks will follow suit.
Front Office Vs. Middle Office Vs. Back Office In Investment Banking: What’s The Difference?
For example, Goldman Sachs is expected to raise the base salary of entry-level investment banking analysts from $85,000 to $110,000.
Therefore, the major banks pay particular attention to building a pay culture in addition to increasing the base pay.

Investment banks have rigid and rigid hierarchies that can be compared to a military organization, where each rank is important and provides a certain, substantial benefit as it progresses. Typical levels of investment banking are common to almost all investment banks, although non-U.S. banks may have different job titles. However, job descriptions in different investment banks are similar.
Almost all investment banking analysts enter the field as graduates of top business schools. Most investment banks have a two-year program, after which the analyst is promoted to junior level. Most of the analysis involves researching companies, creating financial models in Excel, and PowerPoint presentations that banks use to pitch to potential clients. An analyst earns between $100,000 and $150,000 per year.
After two to three years as an analyst, you are promoted to junior level. Also, if you have a master’s degree from a top MBA program, you can sometimes bypass the analytics position and get the degree directly. In addition to seeing analysts, an employee spends most of his time talking to customers and finding out what they want. They may also work with analysts on financial modeling and preparing materials for presentation collections. Lawyers’ salaries range from $110,000 to $300,000.
An employee usually reaches the rank of vice president after working in the bank for three to four years. The VP communicates with clients and informs them of the progress of the business or transaction. By default, analysts and staff report to the vice president, who ensures PowerPoint presentations and financial models are built correctly. Vice presidents play an active role in closing deals with clients, so salaries are significantly higher than staff or analysts. Salaries typically range from $150,000 to $450,000.

A senior vice president may also be called a director or director, depending on the company. To become a senior vice president, you have to work your way up through the ranks at an investment bank. It is unheard of for someone from outside the bank to be hired for this position. The Senior Vice President works directly with many clients and acts as a bridge between clients and lower levels. Senior vice president salaries range from $250,000 to $1.5 million.
A managing director is at the top level of an investment bank and is responsible for the bank’s profitability. It takes a lot of time, considerable skill, and even some luck to reach this level. A managing director’s job is to be aware of how all transactions are progressing and to be aware of what is happening in the political or economic environment that affects the bank’s or client’s business. A managing director spends most of his time prospecting for new clients, meeting potential investors, and building relationships. They earn between $500,000 and $4 million, and in a good year their total income can reach $10 million. If the bank does not make money, then the administrator takes over the manager. If the bank is doing well, they will borrow in the form of higher compensation.
