SCUSD has about 250 MEP students, and Martinez knows them all. She visits families to determine their eligibility for the MEP program and provides year-round counseling and support. The Cost Of Coding Camp

At iD Tech Computer Camp, MEP students learned to program and solve technical problems by designing computer games and building robots in a relaxed environment with new tech-savvy instructors recruited by iD Tech from around the country.
“I like it because I learn about robots and build a robot. It has a motor and you can program it through the computer,” said Fryda, a 7th grader at Peterson Middle School who attended the camp with her brother Johan, a 4th grader at Braly Elementary. They have a computer at home, but it doesn’t work.
Miguel, an 8th grader at Peterson, “had fun” designing a computer game. Her brother and sister, Jovany, a 7th-grader from Peterson, and Valerie, a 4th-grader from Ponderosa Elementary, also attended the computer camp. Valerie created a “female superhero” who would “dodge asteroids coming from the sky to Earth.” The family shares a computer at home.

The Migrant Education Program was authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and was reauthorized in 2001 by the No Child Left Behind Act. The 2001 law requires states to close achievement gaps by providing all children with access to a high-quality education. Funded by federal grants to state educational institutions, the MEP establishes or improves existing educational programs for migrant children.
“Over the course of a decade, we’ve sent dozens of Migrant Education Program students to our [computer] camps,” said Karen Thurm Safran, vice president of Strategic Partnerships at iD Tech. “This is an opportunity students might not otherwise have and it will help them with their studies and build self-confidence. Give them a look at STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) careers.”
Registration is now open for the Santa Clara University Summer Tech Camps, operated by iD Tech, which will one-for-one match a $500 scholarship awarded to an MEP student.

Abraham was one of 24 students who received a scholarship to take one-week summer courses at iD Tech on topics ranging from robotics and coding to video production.
“It was a really good experience,” says Abraham, who learned to code wearable technology at the camp. “I come from a low-income situation, so without the grant it would be difficult for my family.”

Of the many inequalities exposed by the COVID-19 crisis, the digital divide is one of the biggest. The pandemic is disproportionately affecting students who do not have access to the technology needed for distance learning. Coding Our Future aims to help bridge the educational gap by providing scholarship students with laptops and Internet access at home. To increase impact and reach potential scholarship students, Coding Our Future will also partner with organizations such as the Black Student Fund, DMV National Society of Black Engineers, Jr. Chapter and Howard University High School of Mathematics and Science.
