Are you an American over the age of 18? Then there’s a good chance your data was compromised in the 2017 Equifax hack, when hackers stole the personal information of more than 147 million people.
It sure stinks, but here’s the good news: a class-action lawsuit was filed on behalf of all 147 million victims, and the settlement resulted in each victim receiving some form of compensation from Equifax — anywhere from $125 to $20,000.

Getting Emails About The Equifax Settlement? How To Tell If They Are Real
2. You may be wondering if you have been affected by a data breach? You can check it instantly with this tool.
By entering the last six digits of your social security number and your last name in this section of the site, you can instantly find out if your personal information was compromised in the 2017 hack.
Understandably, you may not want to hand over a lot of personal information to Equifax in this situation. But don’t worry: The company processing this settlement payment isn’t Equifax, but a third party, JND Legal Management.
The company describes its work as “providing the most responsive, reliable and comprehensive legal administration services in the country”.

4. After filling in your details you will need to make a few choices about what you want from the match.
Credit monitoring is free. But because of what this deal has added, you might not be looking for free credit monitoring from Equifax. If you are? Go ahead and pick it up!
Note: Of course there is a catch. Equifax is paying $31 million in payments at $125 apiece. “If claims are greater than $31 million,” the page states, “all monies … will be deducted and distributed on a pro rata basis.”
This means that if more than 248,000 people claim the settlement, the $125 will be reduced proportionally with each additional claim.

5. But $125 is just a starting point. There are other financial requirements, but they require more documents from you.
Did the Equifax breach cost you a lot of time because your identity was stolen, for example? Or maybe you’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out where your data has gone? Or maybe something else entirely?
You can also get compensation from Equifax if you’ve spent a certain amount of time “attempting to recover from fraud or identity theft caused by a data breach” or have taken precautionary measures, such as freezing your credit.
Time under 10 hours requires an explanation, and any time over 10 hours requires documentation – at $25/hour, with a maximum of 20 hours, you’re looking at a maximum payment of $500 per time spent.

6. There’s one last way to get extra money in your settlement from Equifax: to reimburse you for the money you spent because of the breach.
This is where documentation is especially important, as you’ll need to provide receipts for everything you’ve spent in order to get reimbursed. The maximum payout for this category is $20,000.

Although the settlement site asks for a lot of personal information, including an email address, I have not received any confirmation that I have processed my settlement request. However, I had a printed form that I could save to my computer – most importantly, this form contained the compliance request number. Make sure you save it!
