Central Michigan University was founded in 1892, when the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute welcomed its inaugural class of 31 on Main Street. In 1893, it became the Central Michigan Normal School for two-year courses. Two years later, the Michigan State Board of Education took over its direction. In 1910, Central State Normal School opened the first psychology clinic.
Initially recognized in 1915, the first Bachelor of Arts degree was awarded in 1918. During World War II, it changed to the Central Michigan College of Education in 1941. Eight years later, Central Mich. launched a Master of Education program. On July 1, 1959, the name Central Michigan University was finally adopted. During the 1960s, CMU built a valuable biological station on Beaver Island. In 1994, the Global Center for Online Higher Education was launched.
Endowed with $156.4 million, Central Michigan University currently employs 1,017 faculty and 23,335 students. It has an 871-acre Mount Pleasant campus and 36 campuses from Detroit to Fort Riley.

On August 19, 2016, the Higher Education Commission on the North Central Association issued an institutional status report to Central Michigan University that extended Level VI accreditation through 2025-26. Located 259 miles west on Interstate 94 in Chicago, this sprawling 19-state Great Lakes region is accredited by the Higher Education Accrediting Commission and the Michigan Department of Education. Enrollment at Central Michigan University is rated “moderately difficult” due to Peterson’s 69 percent acceptance rate. First-year students must have a strong academic background, including a high school diploma or GED. The Governing Body recommends taking four years each:

The average sophomore GPA of the Class of 2022 is 3.41. The middle 50th percentile has ACT scores of 20-25. The acceptable SAT score range is 1010-1220. Competitive transfers will have 30+ non-remedial credits from accredited institutions with a GPA greater than 2.75.
The University of Graduate Studies only selects students interested in a four-year bachelor’s degree. A 2.7 or 3.0 upper division GPA average is required for enrollment. A Doctor of Physical Therapy requires 50 hours of coursework and eight subjects such as anatomy. A Doctor of Medicine degree requires a minimum score of 498 on the MCAT.
Central Michigan University accepts rolling admissions with special deadlines of December 1 for new students and April 1 for transfers. Notice College of Education and Human Services applicants must file by March 1 or October 1. The College of Graduate Studies has a wide range of program days. For example, Ph.D. In Neuroscience will close on December 15. MA In Mathematics candidates are considered till 15th February. A joint M.A./Ph.D. History groups must be organized before January 3rd. MA in Counseling students apply by 1 September and 1 February.

For the 2019-20 academic year, Central Michigan University is charging a minimum undergraduate tuition of $417 per credit or $6,255 per semester. Juniors and seniors pay $434 for each credit, or $6,510 over time. Annual undergraduate tuition for all US residents is $12,510 to $13,020. The active military rate is $299 per credit. Living in the Mount Pleasant campus 22 dorms costs $10,328 for room and board. CMU budgets $1,000 for books and $1,380 for travel or miscellaneous items. According to NCES College Navigator, the financial aid office in Warriner Hall Room 202 connects 66 percent of CMU’s full-time students with tuition assistance and a combined $90.33 million for an average of $7,631 each.
The Centralis Scholar Award covers full tuition for college students who complete a minimum of 1260 SAT or 27 ACT. The $5,000 transfer scholarship supports undergraduates with 56+ college-level credits at a GPA above 3.5.
