In 1925, Sears held a national contest to decide on a name for a new brand of automobile tires. After more than two million names were submitted, “Allstate” was chosen. The brand was accepted the following year. The success of the tires in the catalog and in retail stores led Sears President Geral Robert E. Wood to recognize the contribution of Allstate tires to the success of Sears retail stores.
The idea to start Allstate Insurance Company came during a game of bridge on a commuter train in 1930, when insurance broker Carl L. Odell suggested to Wood, his neighbor, the idea of selling auto insurance by direct mail. Wood liked the idea and took the proposal to the Sears board, which approved it. Named after the Sears tire brand, Allstate Insurance Company began operations on April 17, 1931, offering auto insurance by direct mail and through the Sears catalog.
This was in line with one of the company’s goals to sell auto insurance the same way Sears sold its merchandise.
At the 1933 Century of Progress World’s Fair in Chicago, Allstate’s Richard E. Roskam sold insurance at a booth in the Sears Pavilion. In 1934, Allstate opened its first permanent sales office in a Sears store in Chicago.

In 1941, only about a quarter of American drivers had motor vehicle liability insurance. This led New York State to pass a law that held drivers financially responsible for damages or injuries resulting from a car accident. This law inspired legislation in other states, and by the mid-1950s nearly every state had some form of financial responsibility law on their books.
In 1949, the Allstate headquarters building at 3245 W. Arthington Street in Chicago was completed as part of the Sears, Roebuck and Company complex.
The central building has been empty (since 2013) and is threatened with demolition. The building is known for its mid-rise construction in the early post-war period. This position became vacant when the company moved in the post-war years.
The company’s slogan, “You’re in good hands with Allstate,” was coined in 1950 by Allstate’s general manager of sales, Davis W. Ellis. At the end of the decade, it was used in the company’s first television advertising campaign, which featured actor Ed Reimers.

Allstate added products throughout the 1950s, including fire insurance in 1954 and homeowners and life insurance in 1957. Allstate began selling insurance to Canadians in 1953. Allstate Insurance Company of Canada was incorporated in 1964.
In 1967, the company’s home office moved from Skokie to Northbrook, Illinois. Allstate continued to sell other types of insurance to customers throughout the decade, including workers’ comp in 1964, surety bonds in 1966, inland marine coverage in 1967, and commercial package policies in 1969.
The brand itself expanded in the 1950s and 1960s and could be found on products as diverse as fire extinguishers and motorcycles. An Allstate car was produced in 1952, but it was a failure; it was withdrawn from stores in 1953. The Allstate brand was eventually limited to auto insurance, tires, and batteries in the late 1960s before becoming insurance only in the mid-1970s.
In June 1993, 19.8% of Allstate went public through a stock offering. Allstate became fully independent in June 1995 when Sears divested its remaining 80% stake in the company and distributed 350.5 million Allstate shares to its shareholders.

In 1999, Allstate introduced a new business model that created a single contract for exclusive, independent agents selling Allstate insurance. It also created a network of call centers.
That same year, he signed a 10-year deal with the village of Rosemont, Illinois, to acquire the naming rights and operate the Rosemont Horizon.
And later classified it to include an insurance company that is underwritten by independent insurance agents, as opposed to the direct writing that forms the main part of its business.
In 2010, actor Dean Winters became part of Allstate’s “Mayhem” campaign, “personifying pitfalls like collisions and storm damage that drivers can experience.”

In May 2011, Allstate announced that it had purchased Esurance and rate comparison website Answer Financial for approximately $1 billion. At the time, Esurance sold policies in 30 states and was in the midst of a five-year growth period that doubled the number of policies in force. In turn, Allstate has been losing policyholders to the top three online insurance sellers: Esurance, Progressive and GEICO.
In 2012, Allstate Solutions Private Limited (also called Allstate India) was launched in Bangalore; is a technology and operations center that provides software development and business process outsourcing services to its US division.
In January 2017, Allstate acquired SquareTrade, a consumer electronics and appliance protection plan provider. The acquisition cost $1.4 billion from a group of shareholders.
In 2019, Allstate donated $75,000 to the Red Cross and partnered again with the organization to distribute more than 2,900 disaster kits in California.

In July 2020, Allstate announced that it was acquiring National General for $4 billion. The agreement was concluded in January 2021.
In 2021, Allstate completed the sale of its life insurance and annuities. This was part of a strategy to increase market share in personal property businesses.
One of the businesses sold was Allstate Life Insurance Company of New York, which became part of Wilson Reassurance Life Company of New York. Another was the similarly named Allstate Life Insurance Company, bought by Everlake Holdings and divested by Everlake Life Insurance Company. The third business sold was Allstate Assurance Co, also bought by Everlake Holdings.
Allstate’s slogan “You’re in good hands” was coined in the 1950s by Allstate Insurance Company sales manager Davis W. Ellis, based on a similar phrase he used to reassure his wife about the doctor caring for their son. It’s been a slogan since the 1950s.

In the 1960s and 1970s, television, print and radio advertising featured Allstate spokesman Ed Reimers. Reimers was often shown making the closed hand gesture. He remained a speaker for 22 years.
This 1975 ad has the egg roll across the table and falls and almost cracks on the floor, but is finally saved by a hand before being placed in a gtly nest.
A 2000 study by Northwestern University’s Department of Integrated Marketing Communications found that Allstate’s “You’re in Good Hands” slogan is the most recognized in America.
The original Allstate logo was designed by Theodore Conterio in the 1950s. Employees were told that whoever came up with the best logo would win $50. Theodore Conterio came up with a design based on the slogan “You’re in good hands” and won the $50 prize.

Beginning in 2003, when policy growth slowed, Allstate television commercials used spokesperson Dnis Haysbert. The ads were intended to convey the message that Allstate’s service was superior to that of low-cost carriers GEICO and Progressive.
Burnett built a character at Allstate as “Mr. Mayhem” and compared him to the character Mr. White from the 1992 film Reservoir Dogs, played by Harvey Keitel.
The character wears a black suit, white shirt, and black tie, and his face is often bruised, scarred, or with a butterfly bandage.
The formula for almost every Mayhem ad is the same. To begin with, the Mayhem ad identifies the risk it poses. It gives context to the situation and hints at the impending disaster it will cause and unfold. For example, a 2015 ad shows Mayhem touching a hastily loaded portable grill in a car before it goes off completely, leading to an explosion in which the still-burning embers ignite a huge bottle of lighter fluid.

As the outcome of the disaster is revealed, Mayhem warns that some “discount” insurance policies lack coverage for the situation it caused, and advises viewers to take out their policies through Allstate. Every ad for ds with Mayhem tells viewers that if they have Allstate, they’ll be “better protected from mayhem…like me.” Damage to your clothing and injuries to your person carry over from one ad to another.
In some ads, Mayhem also advised against driving without roadside assistance. In separate ads, he described what could happen in the face of a driving disaster; these included having to spend the night in a horrible motel on the side of the road because the car ran out of gas, having to change a tire in heavy rain, having to stay out of an awkward family gathering because the car battery died, and finally become the victim. of a criminal a crime due to disorder in a bad neighborhood.
A series of ads in early 2018 showed Mayhem with a New Year’s resolution to help keep people and property safe.
He took on the role of several safety pieces
